“Education Center – Future of Roma”

Majority of Roma people are either illiterate or with unfinished education because they are at the edge of the society. RCC “DROM” started to solve the problem in its roots in order to develop the Roma community in all areas. It started by creating opportunities for illiterate people to educate and for people with unfinished education to finish it.
The concept of the activities of the project “Education Center – Future of Roma” was the following:

* kindergarten for pre-school children
* making literate people who did not attend school
* extra classes for children who regularly attend school
* attending school and after its finishing receiving a certificate from primary school “11 Oktomvri”

The results from the project are:

* 20 children included in pre-school education
* 15 children are made literate
* 30 pupils finished second grade
* 25 pupils finished fourth grade
* 10 pupils were coming to extra classes

“Decentralization and the Decade of Roma in it”

The Decade of Roma is a process that requires implementation both at national and local level. Following the discourse of the National Strategy for Roma and by implementing the project “Decentralization and the Decade of Roma in it”, RCC “DROM” managed to make operation and action plans at local level, and they are part of the annual program of the Community of Kumanovo.
Within the project, presentations were organized in communities with numerous Roma people for bigger influence on and better efficiency of the activities from the Decade. The main goal was to motivate subjects to make operation and action plans in their communities.

“Training of Young Roma through Work”

“Training of Young Roma through Work” is the title of the project implemented by RCC “DROM” from February 2002 to May 2006. The project included training of young Roma through serving one’s apprenticeship (household appliances, cosmetics and massage, accountancy, hospital attendants, forklifts, baker – pastry cook).
In the frames of this project, 120 young Roma gained qualification and prequalification as well as diplomas from the Worker’s college “Profesor Mijalkovic”.

“STOP AIDS”

Within the frames of this project, three previously trained young members of RCC “DROM” gave health educating on prevention and protection against sexually transmitted diseases. The project activities included:

* distribution of condoms
* education of women in reproductive period
* directing to gynecological examination and free of charge tests for SPI

“My Child will go at School”

The campaign “My Child will go at School” took place in front of the Center of Culture “Trajko Prokopiev” in Kumanovo on 29.08.2006 between 17:00 and 19:00. The goal of the campaign was to include a bigger number of Roma children in regular schools. The campaign was organized by UNICEF in cooperation with RCC “DROM” from Kumanovo.
The campaign included information about documents necessary for registration of children in pre-school and first grade of primary school. Additionally, it included information about places and organizations where people can ask for a particular help. Due to the campaign, it was held a manifestation on which participated children included in the program activities of RCC “DROM”. The program consisted of literary reading, rap performances and recitals of children from the pre-school group.

“Stronger Together”

The Youth Cultural Center from Bitola in partnership with several non-governmental organizations from Macedonia made a Law on Youth, a non-existing law in Macedonia till then. The campaign was financed by the European Agency for Reconstruction and the Agency for Youth and Sport. The campaign took place in several towns in Macedonia in the period from June 08 to June 13.

RCC “DROM” was a partner organization in the campaign. In Kumanovo, the campaign took place in front of the Center of Culture “Trajko Prokopiev” on June 09 beginning at 12:00. During the campaign, brochures, stickers, etc. were delivered; it was discussed about the campaign and the importance of the law that at the time was adopted by the government and the Parliament was to vote about it.

“Support for Project Activities – UNICEF”

Education is Roma characteristic that has to be constantly built in order to eradicate the existing problems of Roma people in this area.
Two programs were implemented in this project to do that. The first program referred to social development of the community and to Roma children from Kumanovo who did not go to any educational institution.
The activities included:

* kindergarten for pre-school children
* making literate people who did not go to school
* extra classes for children who regularly attend school
* attending school and after its finishing receiving a certificate from primary school “11 Oktomvri”

The program “Education for All” was implemented in the frames of the second program from the project of RCC “DROM” in cooperation with primary school “11 Oktomvri” and UNICEF.
The pupils were divided into three groups:

* pupils registered in first year (first and second grade) at the age of 9 to 18
* pupils registered in first year (first and second grade) at the age over 24
* pupils registered in second year (third and fourth grade) at the age over 24.

RCC “DROM” successfully implemented both programs with the administrative support:

* 20 children included in pre-school education
* 15 children are made literate
* 30 pupils finished second grade
* 25 pupils finished fourth grade
* 10 pupils were coming to extra classes

Second program: 45 persons included in the educational process

“Expanded Europe – A Challenge for NGOs and Reality for a Local Self-government”

A two-day seminar on the topic “Expanded Europe – A Challenge for NGOs and Reality for a Local Self-government” was organized by RCC “DROM” in June with an aim to include and promote cooperation between NGOs and local self-government in the creation of action plans at local level for promotion of the Roma community.
Results:

* bigger knowledge of Roma NGOs on the importance of the EU for Macedonia
* developed capacities of Roma NGOs for the process of European integration
* stronger connection between Roma NGOs and local self-government
* transparency of the European integration process
* higher level at Roma population on the needs for European integration

“We are All under the Same Sun”

“We are All under the Same Sun” was the title of the project that examined the level of multi-ethnic life and cooperation among children from primary schools.

Project activities:

* asking for opinion pupils from 7th and 8th grades from primary schools, and 1st year students from the secondary schools from Kumanovo
* seminar on peaceful communication
* workshop on the topic from the seminar

The project was implemented with the following goals:

* getting closer the ethnical differences among various ethnical groups
* passing over ethnical intolerance
* preparation for a dialogue
* exchange of experience
* influence on peers

“Study Visit of Croatia” – Zagreb

RCC “DROM” implemented the project “Study Visit of Croatia” – Zagreb from August 18 – 23, 2006 and in its frames our organization visited NGO EOS from Croatia. The visit is an important factor in building relations to respect cultural differences.

The following conclusions from the project were reached:

* during the visit RCC “DROM” gained knowledge about the available funds from the EU that Macedonia will start using from 2007
* it is necessary to increase cooperation with state institutions
* greater cooperation with NGO and local self-government
* making action and operation plans at both local and national level
* making programs and projects with EOC and better life.

“Women Entrepreneurs”

The project “Women Entrepreneurs” was implemented in the following two phases:

* introduction to a business – first phase
* preparation of a business plan – second phase

The project activities were implemented in form of trainings with an aim to train and educate Roma women to start their own business. Two of the 32 women who received trainings started their businesses.

“Education for All”

Activities:

RCC “DROM” in cooperation with the primary school “11 Oktomvri” and UNICEF implemented the program “Education for All” in the period October 2006 to May 2007.
The pupils were divided into three groups:

* pupils registered in first year (first and second grade) at the age of 9 to 18
* pupils registered in first year (first and second grade) at the age over 24
* pupils registered in second year (third and fourth grade) at the age over 24.

There were 45 people included in the frames of this project and among them were elder people with unfinished education.
